Ainsley and Chris were married on a gorgeous day in early September. Ainsley and Chris had many aspects that made their wedding day special and they say it best…
“We both grew up in the Vancouver area and we wanted a venue for our wedding that would highlight Vancouver’s natural beauty. The UBC Boathouse’s setting on the Fraser River and its spectacular views of the North Shore Mountains made it the ideal location for us. Our 5:00 p.m. ceremony on the dock in front of the water, greenery, and mountain backdrop was a perfect reflection of why we love the Lower Mainland.
The indoor event hall is sleek and modern, and the floor-to-ceiling windows and beautiful stained wood meant that minimal décor was required. We wanted a venue that could accommodate our big families and large circle of friends, and the UBC Boathouse’s open space full of natural light was large enough to accommodate our guests and still feel intimate.
We were lucky enough to have our family involved in helping us plan and prepare for our wedding. Our centerpieces, candy bar, and wedding party bouquets were all made by family. The wedding cake made by Ainsley’s cousin, Lucie Radcliffe, was a delicious three-tiered, nine-layered vanilla almond pound cake with almond buttercream , laden with pure 24 karat gold foil.” Ainlsey & Chris
Taya of Taya Photography must have fairy dust. Ainsley & Chris’s day was stunning and even more stunning are the memories these two now have of their wedding day. She did an unbelievable job capturing their day and found unique photo locations in both Vancouver and Richmond for their first look and wedding party photos.

“Ritz Catering provided appetizers during the cocktail hour and a buffet dinner during the reception, and Straight Up Bar Services ran the bar. The servers and staff were friendly and attentive, and the food was delicious.
Our day-of-coordinator was Anna of Perfectly Flawless Events. Anna was very organized, professional and made sure that the wedding ran smoothly by coordinating with our vendors before the wedding, directing them when they arrived and helping to set-up, and making sure that we followed our timeline.
Our goal was to have a wedding that was fun, stress-free, and memorable, and having a live band was a huge part of that. SideOne had everyone on the dance floor all night long, and they helped turn the reception into an unforgettable party. They were great to work with and were extremely accommodating. One of the highlights of the night was when Chris joined the band for a surprise performance on the drums to play Highway to Hell.
Taya of Taya Photography did an amazing job, and we could not be happier with our wedding photos. She was easygoing and fun to work with, and she captured all of the best moments of our wedding. Her focus on natural light made for beautiful photographs both before the ceremony at Jack Poole Plaza and Iona Beach in Richmond, and at sunset on the UBC Boathouse dock.
Noel Blain was the videographer. Noel’s final video was great, and the highlights that he chose will allow us to relive our wedding for years to come.” – Ainsley & Chris

Amanda & Rob were married at the John M.S. Lecky UBC Boathouse on July 3, 2016. The hot summer day backdrop was dressed up with a destination feel with seashells, white florals and flowing fabrics. Their day was filled with love, of close family & friends but also literally with their large LOVE ball that added fun and whimsy to their reception.

Niki & Brian love travelling. Since their relationship began they made it their mission to jet set off to wherever their heart desired and are able to do so both for work and their own pleasure. Therefore, their wedding theme was focused on travel and the UBC Boathouse was the perfect destination for this theme, with the airport across the way and with the planes that fly overhead. Niki and Brian’s engagement took place at the top of Diamond Hill in Hawaii and so the UBC Boathouse being right on the water made the venue meaningful.
” I liked how we were able to have the ceremony and reception in one place. I didn’t want to go to a bunch of different places for the day so it was also the perfect setting for photo’s.” – Niki
Niki wanted simple decor that added a little bit of sparkle to the venue as the floor to ceiling glass windows that showed off the view was already enough. As a hockey fan, the colour scheme was chosen after Brian’s favourite hockey team the Buffalo Sabres.

“All our Vendors were amazing. Ritz Catering and their team were so wonderful and the food was amazing.
Imagine That Events were great at listening to my idea’s and had some wonderful idea’s of their own. They were amazing for set up and take down the day of…they were there every step of the way even though I was in Ontario for most of the planning. They also worked within my budget and enhanced the Boathouse’s space with the vision I had in mind.
It was an amazing day that ran smoothly thanks to all my Vendors including the Boathouse staff who were professional and an absolute joy to work with.” – Nikki & Brian

Sarah and John were married on one of the most gorgeous July days of 2016. They chose to host both their ceremony and reception at the UBC Boathouse due to the location being convenient for their local and out of town guests. Getting married right on the Fraser River was also special to Sarah due to its familiarity as she grew up playing on the nearby beaches. “We loved that we could have our wedding and cocktail hour outside. It was also convenient that we could rent the venue late in to the night. Our dream was to have a fun wedding that would go as late as people wanted it to, and that’s what we got.”
They hired amazing vendors to help make their day everything that it was, but they also had a lot of help from those they love most as their family made their wedding cake and made and setup much of their decor. “We decided to save on decor by hanging our own lanterns and from the ceiling and putting fresh flowers on all the tables. Because UBC boathouse has a lot of natural light this was enough to make our wedding look very pretty. We also bought white lights for the balcony which was very romantic when it got dark. One of my favourite moments was dancing with John on the balcony on our wedding day.” Their friends and family also surprised them with performances during their cocktail hour which made their wedding day even more special. Two of their friends and John’s brother performed an acoustic version of Riptide while Sarah’s best friend performed a flamenco dance to the song.
“Many of our guests complimented us on the experience they had during cocktail hour. They loved the hors d-oeuvres and the cocktails outside. They loved being on the dock at UBC boathouse in the sunshine, someone said they saw a fish. It was really sophisticated but easygoing atmosphere. For John and I it felt very romantic right after getting married. One really special moment that John and I shared was during dessert. While everyone was eating John, the photographer and I went for a walk and took pictures as the sun was setting. This was really special because it gave us a chance to be alone and to take in our wedding. I feel like we will always remember that momen” – Sarah.
Beautiful Life Studios, a photography and cinematography company that services both Vancouver and Toronto captured Sarah and John’s day. They managed to capture the love between Sarah and John from start to finish on their wedding day and just how beautiful their July wedding day really was.

“We found the preferred vendors associated with UBC boathouse were also great. We hired the Butler Did it Catering and we loved how flexible they were with making our menu. We had nut allergies, gluten free guest, vegan guests and meat lovers. They ensured everyone was fed. I was really happy with how our food turned out. We did a BBQ style dinner and it was really tasty and fun. They helped us stay on budget which was very kind, because was easy to go over. Our DJ was Hot Wax. The DJ’s name was Mike and he kept everyone dancing until 3am. He was really intuitive with the crowd and kept everyone going. We also hired a wedding planner, Caroline from Love and Confetti, she was literally worth her weight in gold. She helped the day go very smoothly. I recommend her! We also hired Rob Eller to sing as I came down the aisle. He also preformed on the dock at cocktail hour and during dinner. He provided a really personal touch to our wedding. He created a really good acoustic cover of ‘all my life’ by KC and JoJo when I walked down the aisle which showed how versatile he could be.” – Sarah.

Jennifer and Damien hosted their tea ceremony, wedding ceremony and reception at the end of August when weather was warm and fall was still around the corner. Their wedding day had brilliant weather which was perfect for their outdoor first look at the Terra Nova Rural Park in Richmond and on-water ceremony & sunset photos. They had one of the most epic sunsets of the summer that created an intimate and breathtaking backdrop for their reception. Jennifer & Damien’s wedding decor scheme was simple, elegant and blissfully captured the end of summer feel. We are so excited to share their full wedding feature & thank you to Noyo Creative for providing their stunning photos.
“We chose the Boathouse because we could both be on the water and have a view of the North Shore mountains. We also really loved the indoor space (which required minimal decoration) and having the option of having the party spill out onto the balcony. Being able to have our ceremony on the dock was also a real plus. We couldn’t have asked for better weather or better sunset photos! ”

Emelle’s Catering – “We went with Emelle’s because we felt they really knew the ins and outs of the Boathouse. They were also very accommodating to our menu requests and made suggestions (e.g., renting linens through the Boathouse instead of through Emelle’s rental provider) to help minimize costs.”
Noyo Creative Photography (Nhi) – “We were also very happy with Nhi’s work–he really did an amazing job capturing the candid moments of the day. I feel like I’m reliving the day every time I look through his photos!”
Congratulations Jennifer & Damien and thank you so much for hosting your wedding ceremony & reception at the UBC Boathouse!
