Sarah and John were married on one of the most gorgeous July days of 2016. They chose to host both their ceremony and reception at the UBC Boathouse due to the location being convenient for their local and out of town guests. Getting married right on the Fraser River was also special to Sarah due to its familiarity as she grew up playing on the nearby beaches. “We loved that we could have our wedding and cocktail hour outside. It was also convenient that we could rent the venue late in to the night. Our dream was to have a fun wedding that would go as late as people wanted it to, and that’s what we got.”
They hired amazing vendors to help make their day everything that it was, but they also had a lot of help from those they love most as their family made their wedding cake and made and setup much of their decor. “We decided to save on decor by hanging our own lanterns and from the ceiling and putting fresh flowers on all the tables. Because UBC boathouse has a lot of natural light this was enough to make our wedding look very pretty. We also bought white lights for the balcony which was very romantic when it got dark. One of my favourite moments was dancing with John on the balcony on our wedding day.” Their friends and family also surprised them with performances during their cocktail hour which made their wedding day even more special. Two of their friends and John’s brother performed an acoustic version of Riptide while Sarah’s best friend performed a flamenco dance to the song.
“Many of our guests complimented us on the experience they had during cocktail hour. They loved the hors d-oeuvres and the cocktails outside. They loved being on the dock at UBC boathouse in the sunshine, someone said they saw a fish. It was really sophisticated but easygoing atmosphere. For John and I it felt very romantic right after getting married. One really special moment that John and I shared was during dessert. While everyone was eating John, the photographer and I went for a walk and took pictures as the sun was setting. This was really special because it gave us a chance to be alone and to take in our wedding. I feel like we will always remember that momen” – Sarah.
Beautiful Life Studios, a photography and cinematography company that services both Vancouver and Toronto captured Sarah and John’s day. They managed to capture the love between Sarah and John from start to finish on their wedding day and just how beautiful their July wedding day really was.

“We found the preferred vendors associated with UBC boathouse were also great. We hired the Butler Did it Catering and we loved how flexible they were with making our menu. We had nut allergies, gluten free guest, vegan guests and meat lovers. They ensured everyone was fed. I was really happy with how our food turned out. We did a BBQ style dinner and it was really tasty and fun. They helped us stay on budget which was very kind, because was easy to go over. Our DJ was Hot Wax. The DJ’s name was Mike and he kept everyone dancing until 3am. He was really intuitive with the crowd and kept everyone going. We also hired a wedding planner, Caroline from Love and Confetti, she was literally worth her weight in gold. She helped the day go very smoothly. I recommend her! We also hired Rob Eller to sing as I came down the aisle. He also preformed on the dock at cocktail hour and during dinner. He provided a really personal touch to our wedding. He created a really good acoustic cover of ‘all my life’ by KC and JoJo when I walked down the aisle which showed how versatile he could be.” – Sarah.

Jennifer and Damien hosted their tea ceremony, wedding ceremony and reception at the end of August when weather was warm and fall was still around the corner. Their wedding day had brilliant weather which was perfect for their outdoor first look at the Terra Nova Rural Park in Richmond and on-water ceremony & sunset photos. They had one of the most epic sunsets of the summer that created an intimate and breathtaking backdrop for their reception. Jennifer & Damien’s wedding decor scheme was simple, elegant and blissfully captured the end of summer feel. We are so excited to share their full wedding feature & thank you to Noyo Creative for providing their stunning photos.
“We chose the Boathouse because we could both be on the water and have a view of the North Shore mountains. We also really loved the indoor space (which required minimal decoration) and having the option of having the party spill out onto the balcony. Being able to have our ceremony on the dock was also a real plus. We couldn’t have asked for better weather or better sunset photos! ”

Emelle’s Catering – “We went with Emelle’s because we felt they really knew the ins and outs of the Boathouse. They were also very accommodating to our menu requests and made suggestions (e.g., renting linens through the Boathouse instead of through Emelle’s rental provider) to help minimize costs.”
Noyo Creative Photography (Nhi) – “We were also very happy with Nhi’s work–he really did an amazing job capturing the candid moments of the day. I feel like I’m reliving the day every time I look through his photos!”
Congratulations Jennifer & Damien and thank you so much for hosting your wedding ceremony & reception at the UBC Boathouse!

Just Right! Destination Management hosted a VIP Gala in August at the UBC Boathouse and chose Savoury Chef Foods to not only WOW their guests with outstanding food and beverage, but to run their full event including decor and planning.
The guests attending this gala were from out of town, so Savoury Chef Foods chose a west coast infused decor scheme and made use of the featured carving in the event hall as inspiration.
Guests were welcomed with a cocktail reception on our dock allowing guests to enjoy the water level experience with canapes and signature drinks before moving into the event hall for a five course dinner reception.

“I work for an event planning company based in Orlando that travels anywhere my clients go around North America. Sometimes it can be difficult to work long distance, especially in another country. Adele and Kyle at Savoury Chefs made planning a huge VIP gala a breeze. Anytime we hit a speed bump, they immediately helped me remedy the situation. Whenever I needed to do a call or sent out an email, I received a correspondence right away. They helped not just provide absolutely amazing catering, but delivered an entire vision with decor and top notch staff. I have never worked with a more accommodating caterer before! The next time I have another program in the Vancouver area, I will without a doubt be calling Savoury Chefs again.”

Nikki & Josh’s wedding day was a summer day like no other. Not only was it a beautiful day, but the sunset in the evening was enchanting. Talented family and friends made every detail of their wedding day personal and unique from their live ceremony music, to their bartenders, decorators, luxury car driver, slideshow creator, hair stylist and their videographer. Inspired by their love for coffee, Nikki & Josh made their own coffee bean plant centerpieces and head table backdrop. They also created their own ceremony signing table and welcome sign. Fashion was a key focal point for their wedding day too. While Josh wore RW&Co, Nikki wore a Cosmobella inspired lace dress for the ceremony and she also wore a beaded reception dress inspired by Paolo Sebastion, both custom made in China. Nikki’s mom altered her dresses to every last detail including the peekaboo high-low element of her Cosmobella ceremony gown and added satin ribbon to her wedding shoes from Aldo. Every element of their day held extra meaning for them.
IAMJOHNYOO Photography photographed their day incredibly. He captured the scenic views and architecture of the venue while also capturing the detail of his subjects and love between Nikki & Josh.
“John Yoo did an amazing job and we are thrilled to have made a cool friend along the way! We chose John because his work was 80% photojournalistic, he was so unique because he has such a vast resume with fashion photography! We loved our engagement shoot so much, that we used John’s pictures for the photo booth backdrop, custom guest book and the centrepieces. John is so good that you wouldn’t even know that one of the shoots was in the pouring freezing rain in the mountains in December!”
“Jodi Campbell (our day-of coordinator) and her assistant made sure everything ran smoothly, helped set up & take down and even handled the late night pizza delivery!”
“The gorgeous wood and the beautiful view were reasons we fell in love with the UBC Boathouse in the first place! We loved that it was a venue that was gorgeous without having to dress it up. We got so lucky with the gorgeous sunny day and the sunset we caught on the water! We loved the view from behind the head table and from the balcony as well, which was awesome for our guests to relax out there.”

Christina and Ian were drawn to the UBC Boathouse for it’s serene and calm feel that is reflected on the lower dock and continues into the event hall. Christina and Ian wanted to honor their traditions by incorporating red and gold colours into their decor scheme. They chose to keep their guest list small at 120 to have those that are closest to them and love them most surround them during this very special moment in their relationship. Sunam Events made their vision come to life by creating the traditional mandap (alter) on the dock. Christina and Ian used Maharaja Catering to offer an Indian-style lunch on the lower dock before transitioning to their romantic and vintage evening reception. In the evening, Christina focused on soft ivory, blush and dusty gold details in their decor and vintage focal points with the help of Bespoke Decor. This continued the serene feeling from the ceremony into the evening, but gave her guests a completely different experience. Ritz Catering provided their buffet dinner and Straight Up Bar Services ran the bar. Christina and Ian had a clear vision of what they wanted their wedding day to look like, a balance between their personalities and infusing traditional aspects into their ceremony but it was Melissa Monez from DreamGroup Productions that helped them tie these details all together. This was one of our favourite weddings this summer to look back on because of how Christina and Ian made their wedding day so uniquely them and transformed the spaces perfectly as their wedding progressed throughout the day – also how perfect the two of them are together!

“Ian and I both will always have the best memories from our wedding! I will never forget walking down that ramp towards Ian, and then seeing him made all of my anxiety go away. Everything was perfect from the ceremony, to cocktail hour, to the reception. We loved every minute of it!”
“I kept the ceremony lively by incorporating traditional colours like red and gold. I went for the more softer colours of ivory, blush and dusty gold with a vintage feel by having small elements throughout with the decor. Sunam did our morning ceremony and nailed it out of the park! He really listened to my vision and created a traditional, yet serene mandap (alter) on the dock. He captured our vision perfectly and was very easy to work with.”
“Our caterers: Ritz and Maharaja were both fantastic. The food was delicious, the service and staff were great and very friendly. We had a great experience working with all of our vendors. Straight-up was a lot of fun too!”
“Malissa Moniz who was our wedding day coordinator from DreamGroup Productions. She was absolutely amazing at keeping the day organized. She took over all of my stress and worries about 2 months before the wedding. She worked with us to ensure every detail was taken care of so that I wouldn’t have to worry about a thing on the day of my wedding. Everything ran according to time. She was very detailed and organized and it was great seeing the collaboration between her and UBC Boathouse.”
