October Sunlight || Rozalind+Kyle || 10.09.2016

Rozalind and Kyle were married on the only gorgeous day in October 2016. Even though they were willing to get married in the rain (cue: romance movie!) they didn’t have to. The sunlight was bright and the breeze was subtle. It was such a pleasure to be a part of Rozalind’s planning process as she is a talented photographer in Kamloops, and it’s always fun to be a part of another industry professional’s special day.

“My husband Kyle actually found the UBC boathouse before he had even proposed! Whenever we had talked about where our wedding would be, I had always said that I really wanted lots of natural light and something by the water if possible! So when he proposed and we started talking about venues, he brought up the Boathouse and I was in love immediately! When we came to view the space we absolutely loved how open the hall was and how many huge windows there were that looked over the ocean! Our color palette for the wedding was mostly grey, so the industrial look of the whole outside of the building and the ceremony dock worked perfectly for us! We were set on having our ceremony outside whether it rained or not, and the staff at the UBC Boathouse were so accommodating with any questions we had and were keen to help us make outside work regardless of the weather! Thankfully we had one of the only sunny days in October and we were able to have our ceremony on the dock! It went off seamlessly from waking up in the morning, to a stunning day, to shutting the dance floor down! I think my absolute favorite moment was hearing the vows that my husband had written for me during the ceremony and our first look moment! It is so amazing to be able to hug and kiss and talk to your significant other before walking down the aisle. The whole day was more memorable and perfect than I ever could have expected.” – Rozalind

We chose Blush Wedding Photography because not only are Kristy and Ken friends, they are one of the most sought after wedding photographers in BC (and the world!) so it was a no brainer that we would have all of their talent there to capture our day!

Our hair + makeup, florals, DJ, videographer and decorator were all from Kamloops as I have a very close and personal relationship with each of them and think they are all so incredibly talented at what they do! Our day wouldn’t have been complete without all the amazing skills of all of our unbelievable vendors!

#weddingwednesday || Photo Locations

One of the #1 questions we receive from couples is where to take bridal photos and family photos nearby. My favourite advice to give couples is to work with your photographer as the photographer you hire will often scout locations that they feel will have good lighting at the time you are taking these photos and will have either architecture or scenery that inspires them. If your photographer is inspired, that means brilliant photos! Therefore, I always recommend entrusting within them and letting their magic happen! Below we have compiled stunning nearby “photo locations” that previous couples and photographers have chosen.

#1.  The UBC Boathouse

There are many locations right at the UBC Boathouse that offer either architectural or scenic backdrops. Here are some of the most unique photos we have seen. There are so many beautiful spots in and around the property that we have broken down the locations for you:

#2. The Richmond Dike Way

The UBC Boathouse connects to the Richmond Dike Way that spans from just out front our building, all the way to Steveston. Many of these photos were taken just outside the UBC Boathouse so, these couples didn’t travel far.

That’s a wrap!

One bonus suggestion is Airport Park, just across the river from the UBC Boathouse. We have seen couples do their engagement photos here, but this would be a stellar location for wedding photos for a couple that has the travel bug. If you do explore Airport Park we’d love to share your photos!

Happy photos!

Winter Bloom || Katie & Nick || 01.21.2017

Katie & Nick’s wedding day turned out to be one of the most beautiful days in January. Their soft decor theme that consisted of ivory and blush floral tones accented the cool colours outdoors and created a stunning winter wedding setting. They began with an afternoon indoor ceremony and we transitioned the space during photos for their evening reception that was full of dancing and beautiful sunsets.

A Spring Fairy Tale || Jessica & Sean || 04.16.2016

“We wanted a mixture of big wedding and intimate wedding so we had a forest ceremony for 150 people in North Vancouver, then just immediate family and the bridal party went for a family dinner at Edible Canada on Granville Island. We still wanted to have a big reception with all our important people there so UBC Boathouse was the perfect venue for our reception. The venue spoke for itself so we were able to keep décor to a minimum. All décor and florals were done by me (but I kept it simple!). UBC Boathouse was a beautiful, open and airy space that we were able to configure to perfectly fit our “non-traditional” reception-only use of the space. We did social tables and had everyone mixing and mingling. We loved that we were able to bring in our own alcohol to keep costs down. The scenery was stunning and our guests loved taking pictures out on the deck with the sun setting. The UBC Boathouse was a breeze to work with and made our life easy. It was wonderful being able to take photos in the outdoor space. The most memorable part at the Boathouse was dancing the night away with our favourite people in a beautiful setting! The less traditional forest ceremony and intimate dinner were also favourite parts of our day, but we were so happy to find an affordable and aesthetically pleasing space for the reception.” – Jessica & Sean

Photography: Isaac Wray Photography // http://www.isaacwray.com/

“We choose Isaac Wray Photography as he was recommended by one of UBC Boathouse’s preferred photographers, and he had shot a few weddings at UBC boathouse before, he loved nature photography so he was a good fit for us as we wanted a forest ceremony.

We choose Emelle’s Catering because they were a preferred caterer that was within our budget and we were sold after going for a tasting. We weren’t doing a formal sit down dinner – our goal was to have enough appetizers and variety to please all of guests – they did a great job of working with us to make that vision a reality.” – Jessica & Sean
